Hydro Jetting vs. Snaking: Which Drain Cleaning Do You Need?
Snaking clears clogs fast; hydro jetting scours grease, scale and roots from the pipe walls. Here's when each one is the right choice.
Snaking is best for simple clogs and opening a blocked line fast. Hydro jetting is best when clogs keep coming back — it scours grease, scale and roots from the pipe walls. Many main lines get both, with a camera to confirm the result.
Snaking and hydro jetting are the two main ways plumbers clean drains. They're not competitors — they're tools for different jobs. Here's how to know which one you need.
What is drain snaking?
A drain snake (also called a cable machine or auger) is a spinning steel cable with a cutting head on the end. It's fed into the pipe until it reaches the clog, then it breaks it up or pulls it out.
Best for:
- Hair and soap clogs in sinks and tubs
- Toilet clogs and foreign objects
- Opening a main line that's fully blocked
- Cutting through roots to restore flow quickly
Limits: A snake opens a path through the clog, but it doesn't clean the full pipe wall. Grease, scale and leftover roots stay behind, so heavy buildup tends to come back.
What is hydro jetting?
Hydro jetting sends water at very high pressure through a specialized hose and nozzle. The rear-facing jets pull the hose forward while scouring the entire inside of the pipe.
Best for:
- Kitchen lines packed with grease
- Recurring clogs that come back after snaking
- Root intrusion (after cutting)
- Scale in cast iron pipes
- Restaurant and commercial lines
- Sand, silt and sludge
Limits: Jetting isn't the right choice for a line that's broken or collapsed. That's why we often run a camera first.
Side-by-side
- Speed: Snaking is quicker for a simple clog.
- How clean: Jetting cleans the pipe wall; snaking opens a path.
- How long it lasts: Jetting usually lasts much longer on grease and scale.
- Roots: Snaking cuts them; jetting flushes them out and cleans the wall.
Which one do you need?
- One slow sink or a toilet clog? Snaking.
- Main line backed up for the first time? Snaking to open it, often with a camera look.
- Same clog keeps coming back? Hydro jetting.
- Restaurant or kitchen grease line? Hydro jetting on a schedule.
- Old cast iron or clay with roots? Cut, jet and camera.
See it before you decide
We can put a camera down the line so you can see exactly what's going on. Our $199 sewer camera inspection includes a full report and video, so the decision is based on facts. Learn more about our hydro jetting and drain cleaning services.
How we decide on the job
We start by asking what's happening, how often and which drains are affected. For a simple clog, we snake it. For a main line, we often open it with a cable, run a camera to see what's left, then recommend jetting if grease, scale or roots are coating the pipe. You see the camera footage and decide. Our goal is to fix it once instead of coming back every few months.

Frequently asked questions
Is hydro jetting better than snaking?
For grease, scale and recurring clogs, yes — jetting cleans the full pipe wall. For a simple clog or a fully blocked line, snaking is faster and often all that's needed.
Can hydro jetting damage pipes?
It's safe for pipes in sound condition. Broken or collapsed lines shouldn't be jetted, which is why we often camera the line first.
How long do hydro jetting results last?
Much longer than snaking on grease and scale, often a year or more depending on the line and how it's used.
